What is that feeling when you're driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? - it's the too-huge world vaulting us, and it's good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.

Hello from the freelancing world. It feels like a never-ending freefall, but I’m learning to enjoy the uncertainty. In Buddhism, uncertainty is a fundamental aspect of life, often associated with the concept of impermanence (anicca), essentially the baseline state of everything. I’m not Buddhist, but my understanding of the world is based on a hodgepodge of truths I’ve compiled from various philosophies. So it’s a reassuring thought that nothing gold can stay.

Have you ever heard of the Salvage for Victory campaign? It was a WW2 thing that encouraged American citizens to get scrappy to support the war effort. Conserving, recycling, that sort of thing. For many, these were already part of daily life — a holdover from the Great Depression. Still, “Salvage for Victory” has a nice ring to it. With the tumultuous economic climate, it feels particularly relevant today. Though I’m not sure what victory looks like today, perhaps it’s an inward victory.

As much as I want to be a uniform-dresser, I think the most I’ve been able to narrow it down to is thematic elements and genres. Militaria, workwear, denim, tailoring — that sort of stuff is unchanging, but I find myself dabbling more with the ephemera around that, with different silhouettes and interchanging components like LEGO® bricks. I think part of it is that it’s just plain fun. The whole point of fashion is to serve as a sort of distraction from normalcy, so the tension between striving for that normalcy and enjoying the risk-taking is an interesting place I haven’t been able to escape. Maybe the point is that you don’t have to.

Ok, what’s been on my radar?
