A few days ago, Ruby showed me a video series by stylist Alison Bornstein on TikTok that explains what she calls the “3 Word Method” to understand someone’s personal style and develop your own. (It’s apparent earliest attribution is to an interview with blogger Chriselle Lim back in 2016).

The principle of this method is that anyone’s personal style can be defined in 3 words — no more, no less. It sounded vaguely familiar to me and is fairly easy to understand after you watch her analyze and dissect a few celebrities based on street-style photos. Having come up in the world of Blogspot/WordPress and Tumblr menswear blogs, it felt a bit simplistic and cliché to ascribe rules to style when so many rules I learned growing up are either completely irrelevant or ones I prefer to break. Cliché as it felt, I still wanted to see how this related to me.
